The huge mural - 180 square meters - themed "Social Europe" adorns a striking facade of one of the school buildings that opens onto a parking lot on the campus, which links more than 1,300 students and about 300 staff members into the same community.
Spanish designer and muralist Sokram's painting created a powerful synthesis of the young people's different ideas, with the main figurative element being hands - in wood and in stone, with a nod to the technical skills that some students learn on campus - as a symbol of cooperation, connection and strength to get things moving, and moving forward, pulling as they do at the same sail. The blue background with yellow stars on it refers to the European flag, but in addition to the stars, it is also adorned by geometric figures, triangles and dodecahedrons, referring to the school context.
The mural is the fifth in the series of the #EuropeStreetArt project, launched by the European Commission on the occasion of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU and in the context of the European elections, and received financial support from the European Commission.
The young people of different ages, backgrounds and fields of study involved in this work gathered on campus on Friday, March 22, 2024, and brainstormed with the European Commission and members of the artists' collective that artistically guides #EuropeStreetArt about what kind of Europe they want to see. They chose Social Europe and drew inspiration from the themes that define the European Union's social agenda, such as social inclusion, equal opportunities, fair pay and working conditions and the fight against poverty. The young people then shaped their own vision of a social Europe on large drawings, covering a multitude of ideas about Europe, equal opportunities, social mobility and progress, and cooperation and solidarity.
