Anyone driving through Kortenberg anytime soon will hardly be able to miss it. In Kruisstraat you will be greeted by a colorful work of art by the street art collective Treepack. At the request of the municipality of Kortenberg, they realized a mural that responds to the local fauna and flora and, with this eye-catcher, leaves a lasting impression on all residents and passers-by.
In August 2023, the municipality made an appeal to the residents of Kortenberg looking for suitable facades for 2 impressive murals. As many as 38 submissions were received. From this wide selection, the Treepack collective chose the 2 most suitable walls, i.e. the Kruisstraat in Everberg and the Dorpsstraat in Meerbeek.
Working closely with the local community, Mexican-Spanish artist duo Alegria Del Prado was chosen for the Everberg site. Based on feedback from local residents, the artist duo created a design that reflects the essence of the neighborhood.
The result of the first project in Everberg can now be admired in the Kruisstraat. The mural shows a figure with the head of a sparrow, accompanied by a backpack containing some bird species that are common in the region of Kortenberg. The sparrow symbolizes the adaptability and caring of this bird species for the community, while the backpack, which resembles a nest, represents the connectedness within the community. The bird looks forward to the horizon, symbolizing the future. In addition, the squirrel was added, which is often found in the wooded area of Kortenberg/Everberg.
