Harelbeke world city - Murals for pedestrian tunnel

Harelbeke - a small but cosy town in the south-west of Belgium - is undergoing a real transformation. Treepack is doing its bit with a new work of art in the pedestrian tunnel under the railway of Harelbeke station.

Artists Lobster Robin and Simon Mannaerts, both from Antwerp, designed a story that takes place in the Harelbeek area, with a nice touch of nature, the inhabitants and their history.

The work of art is an abstract collage of elements depicting what a city actually stands for. The fragmentary overlays that represent a kind of mood board for Harelbeke are connected by the landscape and the people. That is what should be central, according to the artists.

With this project, Harelbeke is also committed to sustainability, renewable energy and a green future. Like many cities today, their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focus on this, with the aim of making Harelbeke a city ready for the world of tomorrow.

The location of the tunnel is adjacent to the Noordstraat and Zuidstraat, at the level of the NMBS railway station.

In preparation for the mural, we got to work with 6 young creatives from the art school. They were given a graffiti workshop by one of our artists in which hands-on was explained about the different techniques that professional artists use daily in the street art world.

This transformed tunnel was also featured in the newspaper:

This project was realised through a cooperation between the city of Harelbeke and Treepack. Our thanks go to the suppliers: Vanesco and North Sea Paints.
