The project for UCLL-Heverlee aims to create an inviting and inspiring space for the campus community. Covering an area of more than 300 square meters, this large mural will transform the exterior of the building into a dynamic and energetic environment that fosters creativity, innovation and performance.
The concept is inspired by the idea of a teacher making a difference in the lives of children and young people. The teacher does this by empowering them, making them grow, through their heart for children and youth, through great empathy, commitment and personal guidance, and by challenging and encouraging them. The teacher has an open mind toward children and youth, a belief in the power of inclusion and diversity, as well as a critical eye toward society, and with authenticity and inspiration sets people and society in motion.
The design shows three characters floating through the air with a book and a basketball. The characters consist of an enthusiastic teacher and two students of various ages. The dynamic composition depicts a certain speed and especially progress. The hot air balloon generates peace and calm, focus and concentration. The skyline of Leuven can be seen in the background.
The image encourages interaction and cooperation and has an inspirational and youthful character. The concept can also be sporting and is tangentially related to magical realism. Intended to depict education as an adventure, this design inspires the viewer and gives good cheer to every passerby.
