Every year, Heist is the vibrant heart of carnival. Magnificent events and festivities make it a great masquerade party that shows the creativity of carnivalists at its best. For some extra brightening up, Knokke-Heist enlisted the experts at Treepack to transform a colorful illustration by artist Brecht Evens into a crazy mural.
As the processions of the carnival parade have become the largest in the province, numerous other associations from Belgium and the Netherlands are currently participating. Long in advance several participants started to realize the beautiful show moment. Thus, street art organization Treepack also joined this festive party to make it a unique experience.
The idea became to create a monumental work of art at cultural center "HEY!". Here, during Carnival, the grand stand where the mayor sits on his throne. Just as showy, the new mural will help brighten the surroundings. Enhanced by the striking color palette of Belgian illustrator Brecht Evens. In his design, he plays with geometry and contrasts. According to the English newspaper The Guardian, he is even the best Belgian comic book ambassador since Hergé.
Despite the rain, Treepack managed to finalize this work of art after two weeks of painting. The wall now shows a joyous parade with an overwhelming float and exuberant partygoers dressed in silly carnival outfits. Flying confetti splashes colorfully off the black background. By playing with proportions, shapes and perspective, the event seems to come completely to life. Everyone wants to be there to enjoy the spectacle.
The eleventh-of-the-event will soon open the carnival season by the Court of Princes. Before that, the party will already begin. Indeed, the municipality of Knokke-Heist kindly invites you to attend the official inauguration of Brecht Evens' mural to "HEY!" on Wednesday, October 19, at 10 a.m. A short reception will take place after the inauguration.
